temples and shrines

as the dusk was fading on the remains of uprooted woodwards building, elisa and i knocked three times and slipped silently in to 306 Abbot St. upstairs we discovered where the elves make their toys... in the midst of an annual local/loco group of designers' clothing and accessories sale.

erin-templeton

one designer to note: erin templeton, whose leatherwork is not only skilled but inspired. it's not like she needs the compliment though as her work has become beloved at vancouver shops such as dream, eugene choo, the block and many others. other designers of fame and acclaim peddling their wares last night include lauren elgee jewellry, mecca at large, dust, patina, refine allison wonderland, and mono.

ed and bek

ed-and-bek

ed and bek is a australian clothing brand whose darling little website caught my eye. ed brought her extensive experience and bek brought her greenhorn enthusiasm to this collaborative label back in 2003 which has grown to include menswear and jewelry. their style is adorable, dreamy and frivolous and will hopefully be exporting to North America soon.

a photographer's life

annie-brooklyn-museum

from the press release

One of the most celebrated photographers of our time, Annie Leibovitz has been making witty, powerful images documenting American popular culture since the early 1970s, when her work began appearing in Rolling Stone. She became the magazine's chief photographer in 1973, and ten years later began working for Vanity Fair, and then Vogue, creating a legendary body of work.

annie leibovitz's photography is absolutely stunning. if i was anywhere near there right now, i'd be at the brooklyn museum's exhibition, but i suppose i can settle for buying the book version instead.

classic vogue

vogue-covers

the vogue cover archive is a must see collection of all the iconic covers. the strangest is the january 1946 which looks like a badly skewed photo as the cover...

backstage fashion week

hint magazine has all the best behind the scenes action from fashion week. who needs the runway?

anglophonia

what can you say about vivienne westwood other than the fact that she designed and built what is known today as punk style. if you tossed her in a food processor you’d get a cup of 100% pure muse which you could use immediately or simply toss in a ziplock bag and freeze for later.

salty goodness

saltwater

uk clothing company saltwater has such beautiful style. the colours on their current collection are gorgeous.

shopping with sofia

during the filming of marie antoinette, sofia coppola was out and about around paris and drafted a personal shopping guide for the ny times...

fall lanvin line is beautiful as always...

pretty in spring

the spring 2007 line is in for verrier is in and its gorgeous. i'll be stocking up on lace bustiers and high waists on just about everything for next year.

verrier

underwear dreams

kate moss is appearing in a short film campaign for agent provocateur. the first film of the campaign “the four dreams of miss x” is up and apparently too many boys vying to see kate's' underpants crashed the website on monday. the next film is out in november.

lovely lace

you see, the reason that i think i naturally belong in the fashion industry is because i'm about 11 years before my time. rachel comey's fall line was all about lace leggings, and i distinctly remember sporting homemade ones most likely desecrated from my first communion attire. then again, the all-white and lace ensemble i "stylishly" sported in grade 6 probably resembled the latter as well...

rachel-comey

left to right: spring 2006, fall 2006, fall 2006

p.s. the logo of the label is very pretty. bickham script, i see. with a lot of fancy thrown in.

art of rodarte

rodarte

beautiful behind the scenes of the fall 2006 line from rodarte.

these sisters are my inspiration. no formal training in fashion at all. just the talent, passion, and determination to get the fashion world buzzing with their historically inspired designs. check out the runways from their spring and fall lines as well as read the great interview of the mulleavy sisters by refinery29.

aloha lula

lula-mag

i bought the second issue of lula magazine a couple weeks ago, but i haven't had a chance to post about it. yet another fashion magazine, but the cover alone drew me in. the styling and spreads are jawdroppingly ethereal and gorgeous. be prepared to drop a good $15+ on this baby.

under the umbrella tree

vintage-umbrella

the vintage parasols at bella umbrella are gorgeous. if they'd hold up to the torrential rains in vancouver, AND still look stylish, then i'm in.

curtain call

knightley

i love checking out celebrity outfits. even more when people are puzzled over their choices. even keira knightley had a little change of mind about her accessories midday...

personally, i like it (the second version more). it looks pretty yet sort of haphazardly thrown together.

mini times

ntyimes-mini

the ny times had a great article about the comeback of the mini dress yesterday. i've got a couple that are just gathering moth balls in my closet since my gams aren't up to the challenge.

read it after the jump.

design awards

the cooper-hewitt national design awards were given out last month and maria cornejo was the fashion designer de l'année.

maria-cornejo

however, i love the work of one of the finalists that didn't get crowned. peter som. he's worked with the likes of bill blass, calvin klein and michael kors and his work shows it (2007 resort collection below).

peter-som

i also love his 2006 line, with its luxury gowns and vast amounts of tulle.

ballerina for a day

seychelles

some cute choice flats by seychelles footwear. finally got my pair of the ballet-slipper looking shoes (bottom) in pink satin yesterday (cutely named "little white lie").

prairie wind

more pretty dresses and things by designer, matthew ames.

petro patrol

petro-zillia

from the mind of nony tochterman, petro zillia, is a line of flirty blouses, crochet minis, tiered lace prairies, polka dot sleeves, and much, much more...

the house that madeleine built

in the 30s, legendary french fashion designer madeleine vionnet, the “queen of the bias cut,” changed the way women thought of dressing. working with flowing lines and draped fabrics instead of the upholstered bustles and petticoats. she was the hollywood designer du jour, dressing the likes of marlene dietrich and katherine hepburn.

madeleine-vionnet

now london based designer sophia kokosalaki is stepping up where madeleine left off to revive the fashion house. if you may recall, sophia designed the flowing gown björk for the last olympics. you know, the one that took up the whole stadium? anyway, her 2006 fall/winter line is pretty solid.

sophia-kokosalaki

the off-the shoulder leather jacket is my favorite piece. i have a denim jacket reminiscent to the cut, but decidedly less classy and more, uh, 80s.

on the beach

vintage-swimsuit

isn't it gorgeous? it's my new vintage swimsuit, c/o ebay!

Features layer upon layer of 1" chantilly type lace, on a silky nylon beige backing. Fully lined, reinforced "bullet" bra with ruffled edge, shirring in center, elasticized ruched side panels, boy cut leg. Attached nylon jersey under pantie, 12" back zipper, ties so that you can wear strapless, or with the tie around neck straps. This is the ultimate sexy, feminine, "Lolita" pin up suit, quality construction and tailoring.

my not-for-the-water look, i'll only be catching some rays on the beach in this number.

sartorialism

the-sartorialist

scott schuman, aka, the sartorialist, is a fashion photog with a quick draw on the shutter. he's got the fashion world all a-aflutter with his candid portraits of well-dressed, immaculate-tressed new yorkers. his blog is a definite bookmark for great on-the-street inspiration ideas.

belted

all hollywood seems to be in love with designer karen zambos. nicole richie must be like the sambos poster girl, isn't she? she even named her jumpsuit after the skeletal starlet.

karen-zambos

zambos' elegantly waisted belt line (top row) has just been released and it's great. and i've always been a fan of her vintage couture line, but there's something about the model poses on her website that really is unnerving. nothing like putting sub-par models with hokey stances to make me second guess my love for the clothing.

light as a fether(ston)

erin-fetherston1

erin fetherston (pictured above in the bright red) is a brilliant young designer. her gauzy, vintage inspired dresses of her current spring 2006 line are breathtaking. she's only 25, just recently graduated design school, and rubs elbows with the likes of actress kirsten dunst and director ellen von enwerth who loved her dresses that they helped her make a short movie featuring her collection.

here's a great interview about her newfound successes.

spring 2006

model fashion

i always cringe at the thought of celebrities trying their hand in the fashion world. the runways of j.lo, puffy, and lamb have been scrubbed from my memory banks. with steel wool. my hippocampus is still recovering.

but actress milla jovovich and former model carmen hawk of jovovich-hawk have surpassed the nightmare of the overhyped, nontalented celebrity-designer of yesterday.

the 2006 fall line features gorgeous blouses, vintage-style tunics, well-cut trousers - all very cool but grown-up, pretty but modest. the collection is darker, and a little more older (gothier?) and refined than their well-received spring/summer collection which i still adore. the off-beat cuts with pinafore stylings and bright patterns are still my summer inspirations.

creatures of comfort

creaturesofcomfort

this los angeles boutique, creatures of comfort features the best emerging designers for clothing, accessories and footwear. the clothing is very non-stereotypical la, with unique and artsy (and beautiful) stuff from new york and london. a lot of the pieces remind me of my best friend, jenny, who loves scouring the asian malls for slightly off-kilter fashion finds.

bidding wars

after years of scouring vintage shops and consignment stores for just the perfect pair of vintage boots or rolls of antique flocked wallpaper, ebay is a godsend. most especially for shopping for vintage clothing. two of my favorite ebay stores are always stocked with amazing finds.

the bidding for mama stone's pieces grow to atronomical prices, just because their stuff's so damn good.

mama-stone

the olive shoppe is another haunt. this online boutique features gorgeous hand-picked vintage pieces. it's dynamite.

olive-shoppe

main street shopping

i adore living on main street, but the dozens of boutiques and antique stores really make my wallet sting.

twigg + hottie

[un]lucky for me, twigg&hottie is basically down the block from me. their spring offering is beautiful. i'm pretty sure most of these are from the title line, although the other independent labels also looked great.

clever as a nettle

my friend anja runs a pretty tight ship. her ebay store, clever nettle vintage is always updated with the cutest vintage items scoured from portland.

clevernettlevintage

i was the lucky buyer of the pretty blue flowered frock on the top!

clever nettle vintage is one facet of a mini-empire (it's possible!), striving to bring you awesome, stylish and unique vintage clothing. Nothing is too weird, nor too cute. We are a husband and wife team dedicated to the art of recycling, and reintroducing old pieces into the world.

papergown princess

papergown

this 18-year old is just super talented for being so young. sort of makes me feel ashamed about how much my life is devoted to play and how little to art.

justine's been posting her stuff on craftster for years, but i had no idea she was located in b.c. (or a fellow filipino) as well! her website, papergown shows all the beautiful things she makes and i look forward to seeing her talent grow in the future!

oh augustine

ok, wow. joy of oh joy! posted about los angeles clothing company, augustine which does have breathtaking garments.

augustine

but holy cow, that ANTIQUE HEART BACKED CHAIR? i've been coveting it for the last hour after visiting the site. not to mention googling and ebaying for any similar versions. to no avail, i might add... if anyone finds something like that, please let me know!

i adore mi amore

adorevintage

adore vintage is unveiling their new site with 100s more items on june 4th! i'll be waiting with baited breath...

p.s. apologies for the bad color me badd pun...

picnic inc.

picnic

picnic inc. is a vancouver clothing company with a retro kitsch-ish feel to their clothing. i think i have a thing for yokes.

i dig the amazing wallpaper on the runway almost as much as i love that raincoat and boot combo (a must have for this rainy city)... this is from their spring 2006 line, and i'm dying to see what they've got lined up for summer.
